Not a book review: a series where I will share few words, sentences and lines from books that made its mark on my mind.
Today I will share some beautiful lines from the book- The Prophet
A little about this book:

The Prophet is a popular book written in English in 1923 by Khalil Gibran. This book consists of 26 poetic essays & is considered to be the best work by the author.
In the book, the prophet Almustafa who has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses many issues of life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.
This is a book closest to my heart! This book has been my friend, philosopher & guide. I remember holding, reading & flipping through its pages during the worst times of my life.
Take up reading this book if you’re looking to find a philosopher friend. Someone who’ll speak to your soul & guide you towards the right path. Read and re-read this book & everytime you re-read it, you’ll discover new meaning from the same words in the same pages.
My favorite lines from the book:

(1)
“The timeless in you is aware of life’s timelessness. And knows that yesterday is but today’s memory and tomorrow is today’s dream.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet
(2)
“Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet
(3)
“And a woman spoke, saying, “Tell us of Pain.”
And he said: Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

(4)
“You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link.
This is but half the truth.
You are also as strong as your strongest link.
To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean by the frailty of its foam.
To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet
(5)
“For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in th sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

(6)
“Say not, “I have found the truth,” but rather, “I have found a truth.”
Say not, “I have found the path of the soul.” Say rather, “I have met the soul walking upon my path.”
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet
(7)
“And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.”
~Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

I love this book and always recommend it to people. My favourite passage is On Children. I’ve singled out the following, but the whole passage is beautiful:
“You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.”
Thanks
